Administering ACSM and PARQ+ Health Screening Tool


Case Study


Rechel is a 58-year-old businesswoman who owns and operates a boarding house that has been flourishing for more than twenty years. She is already a widow, has three children and two grandchildren who are also living with her. She lives in a home where she grows a variety of plants including herbs, vegetables and flowering plants. Rechel balances her work with personal well-being and a deep passion for plants and gardening. She believes that her relationship with plants plays an essential role in her overall mental and physical health. This connection with nature has allowed her to maintain a sense of tranquility as well as another activity for her physical fitness. For the past three months, although Rechel didn’t have a specific structured physical fitness plan, she spent about 20 to 30 minutes per week walking around their subdivision and moderate flexibility and strength exercises almost everyday in her garage. Her meals are carefully planned, with a focus on lean proteins and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. At her age, she doesn’t have any symptoms of cardiovascular diseases while doing her routines and also didn’t experience any existing serious medical condition. Her primary goals are to maintain a healthy body and live a less stressful life.


Reflection: 


In using both the ACSM and PARQ+ health screening tools, I find the ACSM tool easier to use due to its simpler checklist format. However, the PARQ+ provides more comprehensive information about my client which involves various body system assessments. The PARQ+ may be particularly beneficial in the Philippines since many FIlipinos face more health challenges, live a sedentary lifestyle and tend to create self-directed exercise plans without checking on their needs, capabilities and seeking professional attention. By gathering more detailed information through the PARQ+, we can better understand individuals' health and provide tailored recommendations to reduce the risk of injury, minimize exercise-related risks, and promote overall well-being and safety of every individual.
